Dexter McCoy
Dexter McCoy declared victory Tuesday night in the Fort Bend County judge race, defeating Republican Daniel Wong. McCoy is a Democrat who was elected Precinct 4 commissioner in 2022.
With 98% of precincts reporting, McCoy had 191,347 votes, or 59%, compared with Wong’s 131,142 votes, or 41%. The race followed a turbulent period in county government involving County Judge KP George, who was suspended earlier this year amid ongoing legal proceedings.
Wong, a Republican and former Sugar Land City Council member, was appointed interim county judge in April after George’s suspension. His authority to continue in the role was later disputed after the civil case connected to his appointment was dismissed.
McCoy campaigned on affordability, infrastructure improvements and managing Fort Bend County’s rapid population growth. Wong focused on government transparency, accountability and restoring public trust.
The county judge leads Fort Bend County Commissioners Court, which oversees the county budget and decisions involving roads, public safety, emergency management and other county services. The winner will serve a four-year term beginning in January 2027.
